The Story... It was early 2008 at New Life Church in Colorado Springs. On a Wednesday night, a father in the church spoke to the TAG youth ministry about his generation's selfishness and the destiny of the young to rise up and meet the greatest needs in this world. Students were awakened to the worldwide orphan crisis. It seemed like an impossible goal, but he challenged them to build a home for orphans... and to build not just one, but four, loving and empowering them by matching their efforts dollar for dollar. Students erupted with excitement, and creative ways of raising money ensued: Daily lattes were given up, dog poop was scooped, savings accounts were emptied, and extra hours were worked. It was purely students making sacrifices to give to the children on the other side of the globe. The efforts and passion of the students payed off, and in 8 short weeks $127,000 was raised to complete four orphan homes. Relationships were formed when students took trips to visit the homes they worked to build, and to meet the orphans whose lives they rescued. As focus was shifted away from a self-centered society and towards empowering others, age and cultural barriers were overcome and students got the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the world.
"Destiny Rescuing Destiny" is transactional...we receive our destinies by giving them away. At the Desperation Conference in the summer of 2009 this amazing phenomenon of compassion was repeated. After the June and July conferences, an astounding total of $90,000 was raised by young people from all around the country. Seven more orphan-care projects were funded. And the vision continues to spread…
The 1k Campaign
In June of 2010, we launched Heartwork: The 1k Campaign.
1,000 student groups. 1,000 orphan projects. 1,000 days.
1000 ORPHAN PROJECTS - Heartwork has partnered with several orphan care providers who have proven track records rescuing orphans all over the world. We have comprised a list of pressing needs and projects of these care providers such as orphan homes, kitchens, community centers, and water wells. Action Groups choose from among these projects, and adopt one to begin rescuing destinies. If individuals, businesses, non-profits, and humanitarian organizations join together and work towards the same goal, we will truly be able to have a measured impact on the world.
1000 STUDENT GROUPS - Student groups are being rallied from around the country to live out our faith. James 1:27 says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Imagine what we could accomplish if our generation came together as one army with a clear and focused mission. As we give of ourselves, our lives are changed…Destiny Rescuing Destiny.
1000 DAYS - In the world today, there are an estimated 143 million orphans, 884 million people that do not have access to clean water, and 16,000 children that die each day from hunger-related causes. The time is now to direct our resources, talents, and energy towards what really matters. With passion, urgency, diligence, and faith, we will see miracles as we fight for the destinies of God’s most treasured children.
The 1K campaign goes against the norms and systems of the world. It is not about those who have an abundance, giving token gifts to add another drop to the bucket. It requires supernatural faith, tireless sacrifice, and incomprehensible miracles. It is not about what we think is possible, or what we consider to be realistic. It is about a God who is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). It is about the heart of the Father. He is jealous for the lost and dying of the world. His heart breaks for orphans and widows in distress, and He longs for all of our hearts to turn back to Him. It is about a revival. It is about liberation. It is about healing. It is about love.
